* The Balikbayan Box is a large carton box that Overseas Filipino Workers use worldwide to send gifts and other goods to their relatives back home. Over the years, this object became a representative of the Filipino Diaspora and cultural history. It refers to the ‚heroes’ that manage to earn their money abroad and those that remained home in need of these goods in order to survive. The Balikbayan Box is a paradox symbol of both hope and sad fate, a cultural artifact that speaks about the many sacrifices of the Filipino People and its lifelong struggle to survive.
Die Balikbayan Box ist eine große Kartonkiste, welche meist von den Overseas Filipino Workers auf der ganzen Welt benutzt wird, um Geschenke und Waren nach Hause zu ihren Verwandten zu schicken. Dieses Objekt wurde im Laufe der philippinischen Kulturgeschichte zu einem Repräsentanten der Diaspora. Sie bezieht sich sowohl auf die “Helden”, die es geschafft haben ihr Geld im Ausland zu verdienen und auf die “Zuhausegebliebenen”, die die Waren in der Box als Überlebenshilfe erhalten. Sie ist ein paradoxes Symbol sowohl von Hoffnung als auch von traurigem Schicksal, ein kulturelles Artefakt, das von Aufopferung und lebenslangem Überlebenskampf der philippinischen Bevölkerung erzählt.
